6 Forklift Safety Tips + 4 Safety Products to Protect Your Teams

You can get a hundred forklift-related safety tips with one Google search. Almost all will be the exact same – keep training current, service your equipment, and so on.

We wanted to share something better. Safety ideas that you may not hear too often, but are just as important to smooth daily operations.

We're also including some safety products that improve safety, not just for forklift operators, but for all their co-workers as well.

6 Unconventional (But Important) Forklift Safety Tips

  1. Blow out the forklift radiators with compressed air weekly.
Forklifts act like giant vacuum cleaners. Once a week, use compressed air to blow out debris from the internals, especially the radiator. This keeps the airflow clear and prevents overheating.

  2. Inspect and lubricate the mast chains.
Make sure you inspect your mast chains whenever you do maintenance. Any spot looks dry, lubricate it. If you see scratches or a roller or bearing, replace it now, so it doesn’t cause a bigger problem later.

  3. Who's not wearing their hard hat?
Make sure everyone's wearing their hard hat when operating equipment. As well as when working in safety-conscious areas. (That includes you!)

  4. Monitor fuel consumption across all your equipment.
Fuel costs for material handling equipment should remain stable week after week. A forklift suddenly starts using double the fuel it did the week prior? Someone’s working that forklift too hard and needs to stop.

  5. Check in on workers' mental health.
Everyone gets tired, distracted, and stressed at times. Especially in high-risk or high-traffic environments. Make it known that everyone can & should check with co-workers if they look down. We can all do good work and take care of each other at the same time.

  6. Drill on Emergency Shutdown Procedures (ESD).
When was the last time you ran everyone through an emergency drill? It takes a few minutes out of the workday, yes. But reminding everyone of emergency procedures can & does save lives.

4 Safety Products for Protecting Teams in Every Facility

Sometimes the best way to ensure team safety is to use equipment add-ons. These products act like 24-hour safety preservers, whether you’re using a piece of equipment or not.

Red Zone Lights

Warns everyone of the space needed for forklifts to pass. These lights point at both sides of the forklift.

Laser Floor Marks

Fires a bright laser along a boundary or safety perimeter. Easy way to demarcate where people go and where equipment goes.

PPE for Replacing Propane Cylinders

Never let anyone just pull a propane tank off a forklift! Keep PPE on hand to make exchanges smoother & safer.

Fall Limiters

Every order picker should have one. Clip in, raise up, and get product down with zero risk of falling. Also useful for other work at heights.

Stay Safe at All Times

Forklifts Group has kept customers’ safety at the top of the priority list for decades now. We hope these help you do the same.

Until next month!
